The Pocket Book of Value

Challenge
For my final project at university there was no brief, which created a challenge and an opportunity. The project required an outcome which explored a subject of your own choosing, and to produce highly developed and fully realised outcomes. Taking place over a period of 14 weeks, this project also set the challenge of planning and organising a full design project through all 4 key design stages: Discover, Define, Develop and Deliver.
Idea
After beginning the project thinking about how packaging can be designed to positively contribute to a circular economy, this exploratory project ended up focusing on how our values, as individuals and as a society, effect what we waste. By illustrating my thoughts on the concept of value, and displaying the values of others in this pocket book, the project aims to provoke readers into considering how much they waste.
Blurb
The meaning of the word ‘value’ is complex. Ever stopped to question all its definitions? How is monetary value even decided? What are your values? How often do you act on them? This book creates a space for you to question which objects and desires you hold in highest regard. Quotes, questions, and visual expressions challenge what is most important, and even simple tasks are provided to encourage you to actively engage in profound thought. Example pictures, thoughts and sketches are showcased to provide an insight into how values differ from person to person. All the while, this core concept is considered: If we changed our values, viewed objects and materials differently, and considered that when we ‘throw away’, there is no ‘away’ – would we waste less?
